I've talked to lots of people who have gone to SCA events because it really sounded like fun, but then never went back because the people where so weird. Okay, we're all weird. But don't let that scare you away. I think the problem is that there is so much to do in the SCA that newcomers never find the right crowd to hang out with. If you're interested in the historical recreation aspects of the society, and you watch people fighting all day, you'll probably leave disappointed.
The SCA is singing, cooking, heraldry, fighting, costuming, brewing, caligraphy, drumming, and medival study. It's all there, and if you like the romance of the middle ages, you'll love the SCA. For me the SCA is hanging out with really good friends and doing the things I always dreamed about when I was a kid.
So if you tried the SCA in the past and didn't like it, try it again. It really is as good as you thought it might be. There are plenty of people who are serious about the same stuff you're interested in.
Here are some SCA pages with lots of general links.
